Very interesting to look over these term arrangements. The Films!
As a projectionist you had to switch from one Bell and Howell 16mm to the other as seamlessly as possible, if you got it wrong the whole school would give you the slow handclap! The upside was that once the film was running smoothly you could have a fag break out on the roof...But what was a three weekly period? Damned if I can remember.
Nick Briggs '62-66 writes February '02:
Regarding the three-weekly period mentioned in the School Diary, this was a mark list
for the 4th & 5th forms, followed by a list posted on the board for those who had
performed exceptionally well or badly. As I recall, the divisions were as follows ;
Pupils awarded an X meant an automatic beating from the Headmaster, as this was the
grade signifying gross slackness; Pupils awarded several C minus grades had to go for an interview - but no corporal
punishment on that occasion; The final list was reserved for pupils who had performed 'consistently and notably well'
during the previous three weeks and who were offered a 'prize' of a free cinema outing to
Hereford. In late 1962, when I won such a 'prize', it meant settling for the likes of James
Stewart in 'Mr. Hobbs takes a Vacation' at the Odeon in Hereford......penalty or prize, one
wonders? I think we were just glad to go into Hereford for the afternoon. This 'three weekly mark list' system was, I think, abolished around 1966 when Dom
Mark. temporarily took over the reins when Roger Hosker had his sabbatical.
